The skyline of Pudong

Pudong (浦东) is Shanghai's newest district on the eastern side of the river, chock full of gleaming skyscrapers rising out of what was mere farmland only 15 years ago.

[edit] Get in

Metro Line 2's Lujiazui Station is in the middle of central Pudong, within easy walking distance to both the Pearl Tower and the Jin Mao Tower. The maglev (which finishes running at 9:00pm, but only run 430km/h till 5pm) from Pudong Airport connects to Longyang Rd Station, a few stops away by metro. Expect to pay around ¥150 by taxi.

The cheapest way to get to Pudong is to take the ferry from the Bund, near Yan'an Donglu, at the price of ¥0.8 and even that only when heading eastbound!

A much more expensive way of crossing is the Bund Sightseeing Tunnel (north of the Peace Hotel), basically an overpriced 647m underground travellator featuring several minutes of blinking lights at ¥40 a pop. (On the other hand, if $4 won't break you, it's a really fun and unique experience, travelling under the river to the music, whale songs, and poetry while psychedelic lights flash. A not to be missed tourist trap!)

Yan'an tunnel takes you to Pudong by cab, but expect a long line of cars throughout the day. During rush hours (this also means between 5pm-9pm in the weekend) you can get stuck up to 30 min... It's not a toll-tunnel anymore, but if that was an improvement?

[edit][add listing] See

  • Oriental Pearl TV Tower [1] (东方明珠塔 Dongfang Minzhuta) - built in 1994, 3rd tallest in the world. Featuring 11 garish pink balls enlightened by the famous Chinese poem (大珠小珠落玉盘Da Zhu Xiao Zhu Luo Yu Pan which describes the most beautiful sound when the pearls of different size fall on to a jade plate), the tower has just the same become a symbol of the new Shanghai. A complex pricing system depends on where you want to go and what you want to see, but entry to the ball #2 at 263 meters and its outdoor viewing platform at 259m will set you back ¥85. The top ball at 350 meters will cost you more. Space city at 90 meters can be missed, but Shanghi History Museum offers a glimpse into the past of the city.

  • Shanghai Municipal Museum is located underneath the Pearl TV Tower and costs 35 Yuan without access to the tower's viewing platforms. The museum recreates interiors of houses and shops from the farming era up to the swinging 1930s, has many miniatures of Shanghai's most impressive (colonial) buildings, and also displays vintage cars, old advertisements, and so on. Although light on actual historical information, worth a visit, and surprisingly big.
  • Jinmao Tower [2] (金茂大厦) - the world's third tallest skyscraper stands just beside Oriental Pearl TV Tower. The tower houses the Grand Hyatt, the highest hotel in the world, featuring a 31-story atrium that starts in the jazz lounge on the 57th story and rises up like a space station. An Italian restaurant, Cucina, on the 55th floor offers spectacular views of the Bund and the rest of old Shanghai. For about the same cost as going up in the Pearl Tower, you can enjoy a gourmet pizza lunch here and savor virtually the same view. There is also a restaurant on the 88th floor, which is the top floor and China's highest visitor platform. Entry fee is 50 Yuan regular and 25 Yuan student. As student ID they accept international ISIC cards and local Chinese undergraduate ID's, but reject Chinese graduate student IDs. Alternatively, head for one of the Grand Hyatt's many bars (see Drink).
  • Shanghai Ocean Aquarium [3] is an entertaining and up to standards exhibition over two floors, including a system of glass tunnels that lets you get up close and personal with sharks. Entrance is steep at ¥120, with some discounts for children. Opening times are 09:00-18:00 (21:00 in summer). Take exit 1 on the Lujiazui stop on Metro Line 2, walk towards the Pearl TV tower and look to your right.
  • Century Park is Shanghai's biggest park, with its own stop on Metro Line 2. Unfortunately, many areas have vegetation that is still under development, have too much concrete and paved roads, or both. Still a good and relaxing get-away though. Entrance is ¥10.
  • The Science Museum has a stop on Metro Line 2, but focuses on Western Science.

Architecture buffs might also want to check out the race that's going on next to the Jinmao Tower, where Shanghai is trying to build a skyscraper that should again become the tallest building in the world, at least for a while. Another minor sight is the Confucian Temple that can be visited on YuanShen Lu.

[edit][add listing] Buy

The Super Brand Mall 正大广场(zhengdaguangchang) near the Pearl Tower and walking distance from the subway 陆家嘴(lujiazui) has many shops and restaurants. Of note:

  • UNIQLO - Shanghai flagship store of the Japanese clothing retailer.
  • Toys 'R' Us - International toy retailer
  • Din Tai Fung 鼎太丰 (dintaifeng) - Famouse Taipei 小笼包 (xiaolongbao)expected to open May 2007
  • 小南国 (xiaonanguo)

The popular 襄阳 fake market in puxi has moved into the stalls in the subway station at the Science and Technology Park 科技馆 (kejiguan).

[edit] Outdoor equipment

  • Decathlon (Jinqiao Store), 600 Lantian Road, Pudong District, 50307558. Sunday-Thursday 09:00-21:00, Friday-Saturday 09:00-22:00. French outdoor equipment retailer. edit

[edit][add listing] Eat

  • Canton, Grand Hyatt. Upscale Cantonese restaurant.
  • The Grill, Grand Hyattt. Upscale American-style steak and seafood restaurant.
  • Jatujak, Xinmei Union Towers, South Pudong Rd. Authentic Thai restaurant serving mouth watering Thai dishes in a fantastic atmosphere.

[edit][add listing] Drink

  • Cloud 9 (Jin Mao Tower 87F, in Grand Hyatt; tel. 5049 1234 ext. 8787) is the highest you can legally get in Shanghai, with excellent nighttime views of Shanghai (particularly if you get a seat facing Puxi). But the views come at a steep price for non-guests, who are charged ¥110 + 15% minimum per head — about the price of a drink and half a cigar, mind you.
  • A cheaper alternative is simply to go to the lobby (54F) and enjoy the view there. Or you can go to the lobby cafe which will set you back at least 45RMB for a soda. The power to the buildings in puxi is turned off at 11pm, which is an optimal time to be present.

[edit][add listing] Sleep

Hotels in Pudong cater mostly to the business traveller.

[edit] Mid-range

  • Historic 1934 Hotel Shanghai Mansions or Broadway Mansions just over the bridge from the north-end of the Bund has reasonable rates and great views from the river-view rooms.

[edit] Splurge

  • Grand Hyatt Shanghai, Jin Mao Tower, 88 Century Boulevard (in the centre of Pudong), +86 21 5049 1234 (), [4]. Starts on floor 54 and goes up another 33 floors, providing awe-inspiring views of Shanghai. Doubles start at US$320, although hefty discounts are usually available. Good location for business, less so for tourism. An amusing trivium: this hotel is serviced by the world's longest laundry chute. edit
