WARNING: The province of Sichuan suffered a catastrophic earthquake on May 12, 2008, centered on Wenchuan County, about 100km north of Chengdu city. Many cities have been nearly completely destroyed, and over 22,000 people were killed. The damage was mostly within Sichuan but neighbouring provinces were affected to a lesser extent. There has also been ethnic violence in areas in Tibet (TAR) and areas bordering Tibet, due to the tensions between China and the Tibetan people.
